There were two software used for data visualization:

  • About wordle: it creates tag clouds or a weighted list of words (and numbers)
  • Type used: Static frequency word cloudit uses font size to indicate the frequency of each term (text clouds / data clouds)
  • How to determine font size: let f<max> be max font size when min font size is 1; t be the frequency of a word; s be the display font size of the word, then for a word represented by ‘i’:

s_i = \left \lceil \frac{f_{\mathrm{max}}\cdot(t_i - t_{\mathrm{min}})}{t_{\mathrm{max}}-t_{\mathrm{min}}} \right \rceil

  • Languages: all other than Chinese-Japanese-Korean
  • Method used: static method of Unicode –> UnicodeBlock.of(int codePoint
  • Greedy Word Placement Strategy:
    • imagine every word is enclosed in a bounding box
    • recursively divide that box into progressively smaller boxes
    • the largest word is placed first in the best possible location followed by smaller words
    • the next word is placed by spiraling away from the previous word little by little to avoid collision
    • collision is detected (broad-phase collision detection) through the hierarchical box space overlap
    • spatial index is maintained by ‘region quad-tree’ (that recursively divides the 2D wordle rectangle into 4 regions) to ensure efficient use of space
    • the aim is to keep all the words within the rectangle without collision
  • What can be improved:
    • Color scheme: should have some meaning as some colours (red, green etc.) grab more attention than others (blue, yellow etc.)
    • Word Form Identification: words like “call”, “called”, “Call” should have only one representative display word (say, “call”)
    • Cloud shape: Wordle should allow users to set cloud shape the way they can do in WordMosaic.

  • About IBM/ME:
  • Type used: word tree
  • How to determine font size: more the sub-branches (or greater the frequency) ; larger the size
  • What can be improved:
    • Data pruning: IBM/ME should treat full-stops as the end (break;) of a branch (word loop).
